And that wraps up athletics for the 2016-2017 JMS school year. Thanks for all the support throughout the year. Have a great summer and let's come back and do it again!
JMS played in a very large tournament on Saturday and it lasted over 12 hours! The long wait was worth it though. Out of 123 entrants, a number the relatively inexperienced but dedicated Cougars came home with some hardware! (Pictures in the photo gallery on another tab) The following are the athletes that placed top 4:
Emerson Kirby-3rd Place in Beginner's Singles
Tyler Dewitte and Mauricio Teran-3rd place in Beginner's Doubles
Trace Huntsberger and Andrew Davis-3rd place in Intermediate Doubles
Rachel White and Karina Salas-4th place in Beginner's Doubles
Tre Montgomery and Ryker Wilson-4th place in Beginner's Doubles
Congrats to all the athletes that participated and yet another special thanks to the parents that made the trip and supported the program. It was a long day and the weather didn't cooperate fully but in the end, the athletes are more prepared for their next and final tournament, the district championship next Saturday, May 6th in Franklin which will wrap up our season and all of athletics for this school year. It's been a fun ride so far. Let's hope the Cougars finish strong and bring home some hardware!
The first tennis meet of the 2017 season has come and gone and the kids had a blast! After an hour and a half rain delay the decision was made to go ahead and continue with the meet. Each child was given two matches. The goal of the day was for everyone to get comfortable with the rules and format of tennis before the big tournament next weekend against Round Rock. Since this was an informal tournament there were no trophies given nor places to earn. It was all about having fun and I think it was mission accomplished. Thanks to all the parents that made the trip and were patient with the weather. Also thanks to those that donated food!
The Cougars will next be in North Austin facing a Round Rock school on Saturday, April 29th. The girls will start playing at 8:00 and the boys will start at 1:00. Drop off will be at 6:45 just like last week. A flyer was sent home and a Remind was also sent out with tournament details.
The results are in! JMS' first ever tennis season is officially over and I couldn't be more proud of our success so early on. Here are the results.

Though our team was not at full strength this Saturday, I couldn't be more happy with the results. The athletes all played well. Here are some results:

Quick shout out to the following individuals for winning their matches:

Teams will be separated by boys and girls and also 7th and 8th grades. There is no limit to how many participants we can have. EVERYONE is guaranteed a chance to play if they are eligible.
The school will furnish tennis balls, training equipment and T-Shirts. Student-athletes need a pair of athletic shorts with pockets.
The school will NOT provide racquets! I have a list of suggestions along with links at the bottom.
Since tennis will be open to all 7th and 8th grade students (not just those in athletics), it needs to be said that they MUST have a physical on file by the first day of practice. Any student that does not have a physical by April 11th will not be allowed to try out for tennis.
All tennis athletes will be governed by U.I.L. rules including NO PASS NO PLAY. The 5th six weeks is over on Friday, April 15th. Any student that is failing a class on that date will not be allowed to participate further in tennis. All students are welcome to come to the first week of practice, failing or not.
Here is a website to help you choose the proper racquet for your child (one size does NOT fit all):

Prices for lessons vary and some require reservations so calling ahead for information is the best bet.
YouTube also has great videos if you just want to take your child up to the high school and practice some basics without the added cost of lessons.

On Tuesday, February 9th, there will be a mandatory meeting for any parents interested in having their children play tennis this year. Tennis season will begin on Monday, April 11th, immediately after track season ends and will last until their last meet on Monday, May 2nd. Since this will be the first year for JMS to offer tennis, I am doing my best to come up with a list of answers to questions I feel many parents will have. If anyone reading this has any questions that they would like to make sure are answered that night, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and I will gladly add your question to the list. Thanks so much!
